Self-improvement is an essential component of a well-balanced life, especially for women of color. We have to tackle racism, sexism, climate change, a terrible economy, and a host of other problems while keeping our souls aligned. Maintaining our mental well-being in a world that barely loves us is an act of resistance. As esteemed queer Black writer Audre Lorde once said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.
That is why it is vital bloggers like Makyla B. exist. Starting in March 2019, The I Am W.O.M.A.N Blog, an acronym for I Am Working On Myself And Narrative (awesome right?), is a platform that focuses on improving oneself through positivity, self-exploration, and growth. With topics such as 5 Ways To Reduce Mental Stress During COVID-19 and How To Start Your Personal Development Journey, Makyla provides practical ways for people to control their narratives and improve their lives.

Can you describe your blog?
The I Am W.O.M.A.N Blog is an acronym: I Am Working On Myself And Narrative, a blog geared towards personal growth and self-exploration. The purpose of my blog is to explore the results of shaping my mind, building my character, cleansing my soul, and nurturing my body the good old-fashioned way – by exploring, learning, growing, and evolving.
Why did you become a blogger?
Two years ago I immigrated to New Jersey from my home city, Montreal, to be with my then-new husband after five years of being long distance. For those first two years, I couldn't work without a permit (it was in the works). So, I started my blog as a hobby to help give my days a sense of purpose and to cater to my creative soul, which yearned to share my life lessons of personal growth and self-discovery with others who may yearn for the same. Even though I'm able to work [in the United States] now, my blog has developed into more than just a hobby, but my passion.
What are your goals with your blog?
My goals are to incorporate my new life coach teachings with my readers, provide a personal development coaching service, as well as continuing to share blog posts related to growth, self-love, self-care, goal setting, manifesting, positivity, and more.
What makes your blog unique?
I share my personal experiences as well as my tips/tricks for managing life, getting closer to your true self, and creating your dream life.
What do you want readers to take away from your writing?
I want readers to feel inspired by their own strength and inner power to grow and discover more about themselves. Feel enlightened and informed. And leave learning something new.
Do you have any final words?
[A]s a biracial black woman, I appreciate you elevating other underrepresented people & highlighting them on your platform.
