According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy made 4.5 million dollars in 2018, a 6.4 percent jump from 2017. An industry that relates to improving physical and mental health, wellness is generally created by and marketed to people from affluent backgrounds. Sadly, this erasure of people of color in the wellness industry is troubling since health problems are higher in black and brown communities. It is even more depressing when one must consider how much the coronavirus disproportionately affects black and brown folks in relation to their white counterparts. Fortunately, women like Tori are using their expertise in wellness to help improve the lives of others.

Tori is the creator of My Natural Decision, a wellness blog dedicated to creating a well-balanced self through holistic and alternative means. With a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and a background in nutrition education, this bright curly-haired Latina uses her platform to help readers improve their physical, mental, and spiritual selves. On her blog, this wellness expert covers everything from plant-based eating to learning how to repair damaged curly hair. As one of the only people in her family who studies the science of health and wellness, Tori’s mission is to spread the benefits of living a healthy life to as many people as possible.

It is a pleasure getting to know Tori. Read the budding wellness guru comments below on this week’s blogger of the week.

Some of these answers were lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

Can you describe your blog?
“[My Natural Decision is a] holistic health and wellness blog striving to reach people ready to do the work in healing themselves.”

Why did you become a blogger?
“I
felt the need to curate a creative outlet that aligned with my passion for wellness. I love teaching and want to connect with other like-minded people — the blogging community felt like the best way to do this.”

What are your goals with your blog?
I want to create a community surrounding my blog and be able to take what I’m learning on my health journey to inspire others.”

What makes your blog unique?
I hope to provide [a] perspective from the modern generation. I don’t see too many voices in their early twenties advocating for healing at a young age.”

What do you want readers to take away from your writing?
I want them to understand that everything comes from within. Our healing, our destination all come from the work we put into it.”

Do you have any final words?
“Bloggers of color are not spotlighted enough across my social media platforms. This [blog] is important to me, and an area of blogging that I feel is lacking. I have been actively seeking out opportunities to connect with and learn from bloggers of color.”
